Step length is estimated from your height, sex and pace with the equations published by Hoeger and colleagues in ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal (2008), which measured the number of steps needed to cover one mile at six walking and running speeds. Calories use the MET values of the Compendium of Physical Activities. Both are listed in the sources at the bottom of the page. Results are estimates: terrain, shoes, fatigue and your own way of walking all change your step length.
How it works
How does the steps to km calculator work?
Distance is simply the number of steps multiplied by the length of one step. Everything depends on that second number.
The formula
Distance (km) = steps × step length (m) ÷ 1,000
With a 0.77 m step, 10,000 steps cover 10,000 × 0.77 = 7,700 m, that is 7.7 km. In reverse, steps = distance (m) ÷ step length.
A pedometer, a phone or a watch counts steps, not distance. To turn steps into kilometres you need to know how far each step takes you: your step length. Multiply it by the number of steps and you have the distance in metres; divide by 1,000 for kilometres.
Step length is not the same for everyone. It grows with height, it is slightly shorter for women than for men of the same height, and above all it changes with speed: the faster you walk or run, the longer each step. That is why two people who both log 10,000 steps rarely cover the same distance.
This calculator does not use a single average step. It estimates your own step length from your height, sex and pace, using equations built from measured data, and lets you replace that estimate with a step length you have measured yourself.

Where the step length comes from
The estimate uses the prediction equations published in 2008 by Hoeger, Bond, Ransdell, Shimon and Merugu in ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal. Forty-four adults walked and ran one mile on a treadmill at six speeds (20 and 15 minutes per mile walking, 12, 10, 8 and 6 minutes per mile running) while a pedometer counted their steps. From those measurements the authors derived the number of steps per mile as a function of pace and height:
Walking, women
steps per mile = 1,949 + 63.4 × pace − 14.1 × height
Walking, men
steps per mile = 1,916 + 63.4 × pace − 14.1 × height
Running, everyone
steps per mile = 1,084 + 143.6 × pace − 13.5 × height
Pace in minutes per mile, height in inches. The calculator converts your height and speed, divides by 1.609 to obtain steps per kilometre, then deduces your step length. When you prefer not to state your sex, it uses the midpoint of the two walking equations. On average the participants needed 2,252 steps to walk a mile at 20 minutes per mile and 1,935 at 15 minutes per mile, but only 1,080 to run it at 6 minutes per mile.
What about the “0.415 × height” rule?
Many sites estimate step length as 41.5 % of height for men and 41.3 % for women. It is a handy rule of thumb, and at a relaxed pace of about 4.8 km/h it gives almost the same result as the equations above (a 170 cm person gets 71 cm either way). Its weakness is that it ignores speed: at a brisk 6.4 km/h the same person takes steps of about 83 cm, 17 % longer, and while running at 10 km/h more than a metre. The pace setting is what makes this calculator more precise than a fixed percentage.
Steps per kilometre
How many steps are in a kilometre?
Between about 1,150 and 1,500 steps when walking, and under 1,000 when running.
At a normal walking pace, a kilometre takes roughly 1,300 steps: 1,350 for a woman of 160 cm, 1,260 for a man of 180 cm. Walk slowly and the count climbs towards 1,450; walk briskly and it drops towards 1,150. Running at 10 km/h, with steps of about a metre, a kilometre is only 950 to 1,000 steps.
The same logic gives the number of steps in a mile: multiply by 1.609. A mile is about 2,100 walking steps for an average adult, which is where the familiar “2,000 steps per mile” figure comes from.
Because height matters, the tables further down give the steps per kilometre for several heights and paces. For your own figure, use the calculator: it shows your steps per km next to the distance.

How far is 10,000 steps in km?
Between 7 and 8 kilometres for most adults walking at a normal pace, and up to 9 km at a brisk pace.
Ten thousand steps is about 7.7 km for a 170 cm person walking at 5.5 km/h, 7.5 km for a woman of 165 cm and 7.9 km for a man of 180 cm. Walk slowly and you cover closer to 7 km; walk briskly and you pass 8.5 km. At a normal pace it takes roughly an hour and twenty-five minutes.
The 10,000 figure did not come out of a laboratory. It comes from a Japanese pedometer of the 1960s sold as the manpo-kei, literally the “10,000-step meter”. The round number was easy to remember and it spread around the world as a daily target.

What research says about daily steps

A 2022 meta-analysis of 15 cohorts and 47,471 adults published in The Lancet Public Health (Paluch and colleagues) found that the risk of death kept falling as daily steps rose, then levelled off at about 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for people aged 60 and over and 8,000 to 10,000 for younger adults.

A 2023 meta-analysis of 17 cohorts and 226,889 people in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology (Banach and colleagues) measured benefits from as little as 3,967 steps a day for all-cause mortality and 2,337 for cardiovascular mortality, with every extra 1,000 daily steps linked to a 15 % lower risk of death.

The World Health Organization does not count steps: it recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity. A brisk 30-minute walk a day, about 3,500 steps, meets the lower end of that range on its own.

Measure it yourself
How to measure your own step length
Ten minutes with a tape measure give a better number than any formula.
Repeat the test at the pace you use most: brisk walking on your commute gives longer steps than strolling through a shop. If you also run, measure a running step separately, it will be much longer.
The same measurement can be typed into the settings of most watches and apps. Their default step length is a guess based on your height, so replacing it with a measured value improves every distance they display.

The calculator always shows the distance in kilometres and in miles, and the second tab accepts a distance in miles as well. One mile is 1.609 km, so an average adult takes about 2,100 steps per mile when walking at a normal pace, and 10,000 steps come to 4.8 miles. Height can be entered in feet and inches with the unit switch next to the field.

Steps and kilometres: your questions answered
Short answers to the questions people ask most about converting steps into distance.
Multiply your number of steps by your step length in metres, then divide by 1,000. With a step of 0.75 m, 8,000 steps make 8,000 × 0.75 = 6,000 m, so 6 km. If you do not know your step length, the calculator estimates it from your height, sex and pace, or you can measure it in a few minutes.
About 1,300 steps for an average adult walking at a normal pace, with a range of roughly 1,150 to 1,500 depending on height and speed. Taller people and faster walkers need fewer steps; shorter people and slow walkers need more. Running at 10 km/h, a kilometre is only 950 to 1,000 steps.
Between 7 and 8 km for most adults at a normal walking pace: 7.5 km for a woman of 165 cm, 7.9 km for a man of 180 cm. A brisk walk pushes it towards 8.5 km, a relaxed stroll brings it down to about 7 km, and 10,000 running steps cover more than 10 km.
Roughly 3.5 to 4 km when walking: 3.8 km for a 170 cm person at 5.5 km/h. It is half of the 10,000-step figure, so simply halve any result you get for 10,000 steps.
At a normal walking pace, 5 km is about 6,500 steps and 10 km about 13,000 steps for a 170 cm adult. A half marathon (21.1 km) is around 27,500 walking steps and a full marathon (42.2 km) around 55,000. Runners take far fewer: a 10 km run at 10 km/h is close to 9,700 steps.
Slightly. In the study behind this calculator, women needed on average 33 more steps per mile than men of the same height when walking, about 20 steps more per kilometre. Height and pace matter far more, which is why both are asked for. Choose “prefer not to say” and the calculator uses the midpoint of the two equations.
Watches and phones convert steps with their own default step length, sometimes corrected by GPS when a satellite signal is available. Indoors, on a treadmill or in dense streets there is no GPS and the device falls back on its guess. Entering a measured step length in the device settings, and in this calculator, brings the two figures closer together.
Yes, and by more than most people expect. At a relaxed 4.8 km/h a 170 cm adult takes steps of about 71 cm; at a brisk 6.4 km/h, about 83 cm; jogging at 8 km/h, about 84 cm; running at 10 km/h, just over a metre. That is why the calculator asks for your pace rather than using one fixed step length.
