About Steps to Km Calculator

A free converter that turns a step count into a real distance, using published research instead of a single average step, in thirteen languages.

Why this site

Phones, watches and pedometers count steps, but people think in kilometres. Most converters answer with one fixed step length, so a 155 cm woman strolling and a 190 cm man walking briskly get the same distance for the same steps, which cannot be right.

This calculator does one thing: it estimates your own step length from your height, sex and pace with equations measured on real walkers and runners, multiplies it by your steps, and shows the result in kilometres, miles and metres, together with the time and an estimate of the calories. If you have measured your step length, you can type it in and the estimate steps aside.

How the figures are checked

Every number on the site comes from a named source. The step length equations come from a 2008 study in ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal that measured steps per mile at six walking and running speeds. The calorie estimate uses MET values from the Compendium of Physical Activities. The paragraphs about daily step targets cite the meta-analyses published in The Lancet Public Health and the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, the categories of Tudor-Locke and colleagues, and the World Health Organization guidelines. The sources were last checked on 2 September 2026.

Results are estimates for information only. They are not medical advice, and they cannot replace a GPS track when an exact distance matters.

Languages

The calculator and the guide are available in 13 languages, each written for the way people search in that language. The information pages (this one, contact, legal notice and privacy policy) are in English only.
